According to Spanish daily Marca, Kevin De Bruyne, Robert Lewandowski, Sergio Ramos, and Karim Benzema regret the most when the 2020 Golden Ball was canceled.
Lewandowski is the Bundesliga top scorer and has been the recipient of the European Golden Shoe this season.
Since 2007, Messi and Ronaldo, each one has only been absent in the top 3 voted Ballon d’Or. The two superstars took turns holding the noble title: Messi six times and Ronaldo five times. Over the course of 13 years, the number one position only two times escaped from the hands of the duo, namely Kaka in 2007 and Luka Modric in 2018.
Benzema and Ramos have the most scoring seasons of their career
Because of the stability of Messi and Ronaldo, those who played outstanding in the 2019-2020 season have a reason to regret not being able to break the dominance of the superstar duo.
Lewandowski is an example. The Polish striker has scored 34 goals this season, helping Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga. He won the title of top scorer in the Bundesliga and in the morning received another Golden shoes. Besides, “Gray Lobster” almost put a foot in the Champions League quarter-finals, after winning Chelsea 3-0 first leg round 1/8. Former Borussia Dortmund striker has the right to dream about this treble.
Like Lewandowski, Ramos and Benzema also had a memorable year. Together they helped Real overtake Barca in La Liga, and achieved the best scoring performance of their career. Thanks to goals from Ramos and Benzema, Real won a series of 11 wins, while also lighting up hope of reversing the game against Man City in the Champions League.
With De Bruyne, the Belgian midfielder returned strong after the 2018-2019 season struggled with injury. The core of Pep Guardiola’s play is the Premier League assist king this season, with 18 cleanups for his teammates. He also ranked fourth on Man City’s scoring list, after three forwards Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, and Sergio Aguero.
The common point of the four names listed by Marca is that they all won the titles in the 2019-2020 season, and Messi, Ronaldo has not. Messi’s Barca was soon knocked out of the King’s Cup, finished second in La Liga, and had yet to return to the eighth round of the Champions League with Napoli.
